How to Operate a Boom Lift

Before You Begin...

To successfully operate a boom lift, it is essential to undergo proper training and obtain the necessary certification. Make sure to consult the manufacturer's manual for detailed instructions. However, for a quick overview, here are some general steps to get you started:

1. Pre-Operation Inspection:

   - Check for visible damage, leaks, or loose parts.

   - Ensure all safety devices and controls are functional.

   - Verify that the lift's maintenance is up to date.

2. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):

   - Wear appropriate PPE, including a hard hat, safety harness, and high-visibility vest.

3. Load Capacity:

   - Determine the weight and capacity of the boom lift, and ensure you don't exceed it.

4. Setup:

   - Park the lift on a level surface.

   - Engage the outriggers (if equipped) for stability.

   - Verify the surface can support the weight of the lift and the load.

5. Power On:

   - Turn the key to the on position (choose ground control or basket control) and release the red safety stop button.

   - Hold the engine start toggle switch to one side and allow the engine to crank up.

6. Boom Control:

   - Familiarize yourself with the control panel and the different functions.

   - Raise and extend the boom from the ground control to the desired height and position using the right-side joystick.

7. Safe Entry:

   - Enter the platform using the designated access point.

   - Ensure the gate or door is securely closed and latched.

8. Operation:

   - Use the controls to maneuver the boom lift.

   - Move slowly and steadily, avoiding sudden movements.

   - Communicate with a spotter on the ground for guidance.

9. Safety Measures:

   - Keep your entire body inside the platform at all times.

   - Do not lean or reach too far outside the platform.

   - Be aware of overhead obstacles and power lines.

   - Follow all safety protocols and guidelines.

10. Shutdown:

   - Lower the boom and platform to the ground.

   - Power off the lift according to the manufacturer's instructions.

11. Exit Safely:

   - Exit the platform through the designated access point.

   - Ensure the gate or door is securely closed and latched.

12. Post-Operation:

   - Perform a post-operation inspection for any damage or issues.

   - Report any problems to maintenance or your supervisor.

Remember, this is a basic outline, and specific boom lifts may have unique features and controls. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and complete any required training and certification for safe operation.
